What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22nd. This day was proposed in 1970 as a way to bring attention to the environment and the need for its protection.

Earth day is a day to show appreciation for our planet and all it does for us. It's a day to learn about ways we can help make the Earth a cleaner, healthier place for everyone. It's a great opportunity to get your kids excited about the environment by doing their part to protect our planet and it's a day to have some fun too!

Having your kids interested in ecological sustainability while they are young allows them to pass on the habit as they grow older. It is the parent's responsibility to educate and teach their kids how to be responsible stewards of the environment and to encourage them to love and value their planet and nature. There are a plethora of wonderful ways on what to do on Earth Day with your children and family while remaining eco-conscious, and Sturdy Kids have hand-picked the 15 best ideas to entertain your kids this Earth day.

Get your kids excited about exploring nature with a scavenger hunt! Make a list of items they can find outside and send them on their way. You can even make it a competition to see who can find the most items on the list.

Neighbourhood Clean Up

Get the whole family involved in a neighbourhood clean-up! Grab a pair of gloves and some rubbish bags, and clean up your area by picking up and collecting all of the waste and litter that was left behind. This is a great way to teach kids about the importance of keeping our Earth clean.

Family Bike Ride

Get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful weather with a family bike ride! Find a safe route in your neighbourhood and go for a leisurely ride. You can have fun in your town or city without polluting the environment, and you'll feel really good afterwards, but don't forget your comfy fits

Get Out on the Water

If you're lucky enough to live near a lake or river, take advantage of it! Go for a swim, go fishing or go canoeing or kayaking. Instead of motorized watercraft, choose a pollution-free watercraft. Just being on the water is a great way to relax and appreciate nature.

Make a Bird Feeder

Help the birds in your neighbourhood by making a bird feeder! There are a lot of different methods to make a bird feeder out of recycled items. You can use an old milk carton or jug, or get creative and make your own design. Fill it with birdseed and watch the birds come to visit.

Earth Day Yoga

Get the kids moving with some Earth day yoga! Do a special outdoor kid-friendly yoga class. Stand barefoot in the grass and feel the Earth beneath your feet. Take a deep breath and let the sun's rays caress your skin. You can choose from a variety of Earth and animal-related positions. There are lots of great Earth-day-themed yoga poses you can do. Try doing some tree pose, downward-facing dog, or warrior pose.

Make Seed Bombs

Seed bombs are a great way to help the Earth and they're really easy to make! All you need is some potting soil, water, seeds, and a little bit of creativity. Once you've made your seed bombs, you can blast a section of your yard or neighbourhood in the springtime and see how they bloom.

Start a Garden

If you have a little bit of space, start a garden! Kids enjoy playing in the soil and allow them to assist you and plant a flower garden or an edible garden and take care of the plants together. You can also grow your own fruits and vegetables! Gardening is a great way to get kids involved in taking care of the Earth.

Plant a Tree

What better way to celebrate Earth day than by planting a tree? Trees provide so many benefits to the Earth, including reducing pollution and providing homes for animals. Spring is an excellent season to plant, and Earth Day is an excellent occasion to do so. Choose a particular location to plant a family tree that you can all enjoy for years! You'll have the added benefit of lovely blossoms and fruit if you grow a fruit tree, which you can enjoy once it's grown. If you don't have room to plant a tree, you can always donate to an organization like Trees for the Future.

Make Earth Art

Let your kids get creative with some Earth art! Making art out of natural materials is a lot of fun. Plus, there's the extra pleasure of bringing joy to others when they come across your artwork! To make a creation on the floor, you can use whatever natural materials you can find. They can use sticks, leaves, rocks, or anything else they find outside to create a masterpiece. This is a great activity for exploring nature and being creative at the same time.

Start Composting

Composting is a great way to reduce waste and help the Earth. You can compost your kitchen scraps, leaves, and grass clippings to create nutrient-rich soil for your garden.

Have a Picnic

Enjoy the beautiful weather and have a picnic! Picnics are a wonderful opportunity to go outside and enjoy nature. A picnic can be held both inside and outside! But make sure it's eco-friendly. Pack up some healthy snacks and drinks and head to your local park. Don't forget a blanket to sit on.

Go on a Hike!

One of the best ways to appreciate nature is to go for a hike. Take a pleasant Earth Day celebratory trek this year if you can safely get out to an area apart from others. Explore a new trail or visit your favourite spot in the woods. Carry a bag to collect any garbage or litter you come across, as well as binoculars to conduct some bird watching while you're out! Be sure to pack also plenty of water and snacks to keep everyone going.
